An amazing double bill featuring Glass Tiger and Trooper dazzled the sold out crowd at OLG Stage Friday evening. Both bands sounded amazing and the crowd was fantastic. It is not too often one is treated to a double bill of bands who were popular during different eras of music. Glass Tiger hit their peak in the 1980’s gearing more to the pop side of things while Trooper’s breakthrough came in the form of classic rock in the 1970’s.
Trooper kicked off the evening with a 65-minute set that touched on the peak era of their career and focused on the 70’s albums. The early highlights included “Two For the Show” as well as the Thin Lizzy cover of “The Boys Are Back In Town”. The final two songs of the evening “The Boys In The Bright White Sports Car” and classic rock staple “Raise A Little Hell” everyone was standing and singing along. A great way to end their fruitful set.
While there are currently no members from the peak period of the band, the guys on stage played their hearts out and managed to win the crowd over. After all at this point the band exists to carry on the name and legacy of the band. Vocalist Paul Laine did a fine job vocally and was complimented well by guitarist Steve Crane. The Rhythm section of bassist Scott Brown and powerhouse drummer Clayton Hill were solid and set the tone. Keyboardist Gogo is currently the longest serving member of the band as he has been around since joining in 1995. It is highly recommended you catch these guys if they play anywhere near you.
Glass Tiger have had a long and interesting career themselves. Formed in Newmarket, Ontario in 1981, they have gone on to accumulate 3 platinum albums in their native Canada as well as one Billboard gold album in the states. Four songs reached the top-40 in the U.S. as well as eleven songs in the top-25 in their homeland.
The band currently features original members vocalist Alan Frew, guitarist Al Connelly, and keyboardist Sam Reid. Joining them were bassist Tom Lewis, drummer Chris McNeill and backing vocalist Carmela Long. The lineup has been stable for quite a while and it shows in their performance.
The band opened with the six minute plus opus “This Island Earth” from their Diamond Sun album which was released in 1988. They finally touched on The Thin Red Line album for “Ecstasy” their third song in. They continued mixing in tracks like mega hits “Diamond Sun”, “Someday” and I’m Still Searching” among others. For the encore they played an amazing David Bowie cover of “Heroes” before ending the night with their number one smash “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone).
Both bands average a dozen or shows a year each. To see both on the same night was a treat not to be taken lightly. The fact that both looked and sounded as good as they did is a testament to their commitment to their craft.
