Unsettling weather dominated the local area on Friday, fortunately clearing up just before showtime. What a breath of fresh air to see powerhouse singer Taylor Dayne play a rare show at the Avalon Ballroom Friday evening. Dayne and her band delivered an engaging show which focused on her slew of greatest hits.
While her band was more than competent it was the voice of Dayne that simply stole the show. For anyone who was still in awe of Lady Gaga’s singing of the National Anthem at Superbowl 50 this past Sunday, if you witnessed this concert you may be discussing it for weeks to come.
Dayne got things fired up with her top-5 smash “With Every Beat Of My Heart” neatly segueing into a cover of Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best”.
The tour down memory lane continued as Dayne played “Prove Your Love”, “I’ll Always Love You” and “Don’t Rush Me” all from her debut album. The most recent song in her 70-minute set was “Beautiful” which was taken from her 2008 release Satisfied.
The show concluded with “Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe”, a song which to date is her last top-40 hit, peaking at #20.
It was only fitting that the crowd moved up closer to the front of the stage as she came back with the song that put her on the music map in “Tell It To My Heart”. It was during this where she encouraged the audience to sing-a-long. She followed and closed out the evening with her chart topper “Love Will Lead You Back”.
As mentioned during the show, this was the first show of 2016 for Dayne. You would hardly know it as the band sounded to be in mid tour form.
Looks can be very deceiving these days. One look at Dayne, you would have no idea she will be turning 54 in less than a month. She has taken very good care of herself and that coupled with taking some time off to raise her children has served her well. Hopefully we will get another album release from her in the not so distant future.
