The Australian band Jet finally made a return to Western NY after quite a lengthy absence. The band last played at the now defunct Dome Theatre in Niagara Falls way back in 2004. Thursday night a solid crowd of about 500 witnessed the return as the band ripped through a 18 song, 75-minute set at Electric City. Electric City was the perfect venue in town to hold this show because it gave everyone the look and feel of how a Jet concert should be. Whether they plowed through some of their well known songs or went into some deep cuts the crowd ate it up. They were simply starving for Jet.
The band configuration of musicians included keyboardist Louis Macklin and drummer Pete Marin. Marin replaced Nic’s brother Chris who was a big part of the writing process. The rest of the band featured lead vocalist/guitarist Nic Cester, guitarist Cameron Muncey and bassist Mark Wilson who have been there since the recording of the band’s smash debut Get Born. That album came exploding out of nowhere on the strength of “Are You Going To Be My Girl”. The song peaked at #29 on the U.S. charts. If you were listening to the radio in 2003 make no mistake you heard that song. Judging by the crowd’s reaction that was the loudest cheer of the night.
The band tore through nine cuts from Get Born including huge fan favorite “Look What You’ve Done” which was another highlight. To me that song perfectly encapsulated the night in a nutshell. The band has lost nothing despite being on hiatus a few times during their career. Other highlights included the searing version of “Cold Hard Bitch” and “Shine On” which featured Cester sitting on the edge of the stage.
This was a bucket list show for me. I had never seen the band before and it was everything I hoped for and more. The band delivered a solid, spirited performance. Not too bad considering the band had not released a new album since 2009. Despite being around for nearly twenty five years, it is hard to fathom they only have three albums out. This band appears far from done and judging from the reaction of the audience as well as the raw emotion and angst in which the band performed, better days are on the way.
