After spending the past two years playing the Me/We Tour which featured some of his lesser known songs and a few obscure covers from the eclectic artist, Todd Rundgren has returned to a more fan friendly set. He recently celebrated his 78th birthday on June 22 and from his performance no one could tell as he and the band put on a very tight set.
Rundgren’s band for the tour included keyboardist Gil Assayas, guitarist Bruce McDaniel, drummer Prairie Prince, horn player Bobby Strickland and bassist Kasim Sulton.
The band broke the show into two sets with a mini six song acoustic set that began set two. One highlight of the show was during “Honest Work” which closed the acoustic portion of the evening. It started off with Rundgren a cappella, solo then Sultan and McDaniel joined at various stages of the song.
The band returned with Liz on stage who was from Rochester, NY who won a chance to play with the band for the big “Bang the Drum All Day”. Another highlight was the medley of “I’m So Proud/Ooh Baby Baby/I Want You”.
Rundgren mentioned a few times during the show how appreciative he and the band were for the fans to spend their hard earned money to come out to the show. As he closed out the show it doesn’t take a genius to see how good of a band Rundgren has assembled. My first Rundgren show was in 2013 and other than songs shuffling in and out of his sets, there is no noticeable differences in the performance. I can see Rundgren keep rolling out tour after tour as long as he is able to and keeps putting on shows of this caliber why not?
