The crowd was in full force inside The Vine Showroom at del Lago Casino Resort Saturday evening as 90’s rock cultural icons Collective Soul delivered a spiritual affair. The voice of Collective Soul, Ed Roland led the 1,600 strong “congregation” through many of the bands hits as well as three selections from it’s most recent album Here To Eternity.

“Counting the Days” from the glorious Youth album was the articulate choice to kick the event off with a flair. The band then dipped into its Dosage album for “Heavy” the first of four tracks of the night from their popular 1999 release. A spirited new track “Mother’s Love” quickly followed before the band launched into the dynamic “Why, Pt. 2” which the band never fails to disappoint with.

This brought out “Shine”, the first song to get everyone in the crowd out of their seats as well as the first standing ovation. It was the song that put the band on the map and is always a standout moment wherever it falls during the live show.

Another highlight of the evening was “Not The Same”. That was the song Roland wrote for Tom Petty and is one of the standout tracks from the latest album Here To Eternity. It was included in the acoustic segment that also featured a rare live performance of “Sister Don’t Cry” a track off the debut. The band then left the stage with the exception of Roland and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett who performed “She Said” as a duo but not before rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist and bandleader Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb and new touring member keyboardist Tristan Turpin (Will’s son) returned to close out the song. The song first appeared in the closing credits of the film Scream 2 as well as the movie’s soundtrack.

A Collective Soul show is more than just a concert. With a catalog of great songs such as “Where The River Flows” and “Gel” in which the latter was the first song they recorded as a band. Reminding everyone that Hints Allegations and Things Left Unsaid was really just demos recorded in a basement. “The World I Know”, “December” and the show closer “Run” showcases the band at their finest.

Ed Roland we have a dilemma. The band has too many great songs that are ignored or forgotten in the band’s live set. You have your obligatory songs you need to play obviously and as well as some of the new material when you are out promoting a new release. Personally I’d love to see the band go about the set in a Pearl Jam kinda manner by setting aside a portion of the show where the songs rotate out nightly. This would give the fans, especially the diehards a chance at a fresh set each night not knowing what song or songs would appear each night. Hey a person can dream can’t they?
