Billy F Gibbons and the BFG Band made their way through the chill of Niagara Falls, Ontario Wednesday evening. The gorgeous Avalon Theatre was the venue as Gibbons and his solo band tore through a 90 minute set heavy on ZZ Top but not the expected hits. His solo band features drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton and bassist Mike “The Drifter” Flanigin.
The band was tight considering they are about a dozen dates into their early 2026 tour. Gibbons told some stories including one as he reflected on opening for Jimi Hendrix in 1968. The band played “Foxy Lady” in Hendrix honor. They also dug all the way back to the first ZZ Top album from 1971 for “Brown Sugar”. Some other older ZZ Top treasures like “Francine” and “Just Got Paid” were also featured. A souped up version of “Manic Mechanic” was a pure highlight.
Gibbons did not totally forget the hits as he played “Gimme all Your Lovin’” and “Sharp Dressed Man” from the band’s biggest seller Eliminator. “La Grange” and “Cheap Sunglasses” two ZZ Top set list staples were also featured. Gibbons can pull off those solos in his sleep at this point and Flanigin and Layton were excellent and complimented Gibbons well.
The set was definitely a more blues tinged show focusing on some lesser known songs from the ZZ Top catalog. Gibbons and his band were solid and pulled em’ off perfectly. The sound was pristine as always inside the Avalon and playing the smaller venue made things more intimate. Overall a show we highly recommend should it come to your area.
