Todd Rundgren played his first ever show at the Artpark Mainstage Theater last night. He did however play the outdoor venue once as a member of Ringo Starr’s All-Star band back in 2014. The set mirrored his last appearance in North Tonawanda last spring almost to a tee. Without a new record out Rundgren felt this tour of deep cuts needed to be heard some more as this leg is dubbed the Still Me/Still We tour as a continuation of his Me/We tour of last year.
Rundgren was a man of few words Thursday evening. He basically went from one song to the next in a two hour performance that left many marveling at his stamina. Rundgren just turned 77 on June 22 but looking at him on stage he moved around and seemed exactly like he has for the past ten years. Whatever fountain of youth he is drinking from I’d like some of that please.
Rundgren once again brought the same band as he had from last year. Featuring Gil Assayas (Keys), Bruce McDaniel (Guitar), Prairie Prince (Drums), Bobby Strickland (Horns), and Kasim Sulton (Bass).
Those who may not be familiar with the complete catalog of Rundgren may be lost with some of his song selections he is playing during this tour. There were still several standout tracks such as “Buffalo Grass”, “Hit Me Like A Train” and “God Said”. That as well as the encore medley of “I Saw the Light/Can We Still Be Friend/ Hello It’s Me” surely left everyone in a great mood to wind out the show.
I am not sure how many more times Rundgren will be touring. Once rockers near 80 you never can tell how much longer they will be able to keep going. Touring is no easy task especially in the heat of the summer. Rundgren has been doing this a long time and still delivers a solid show. As long as he has the drive to do it and feels he can still perform at the level of which he is accustomed to I suspect he will keep doing it for as long as he able to.
