George Thorogood finally made it to the Fallsview Casino resort Wednesday evening. He originally was to play the Avalon Theatre last May when he had to pull out of his spring 2023 tour due to surgery. Judging by seeing Thorogood perform he is none the worse for the wear. If anything Thorogood showed at 74 years of age that he can still put on an energetic 90-minute set and deliver the goods as always.

The band Thorogood has in tow are no slouches. Bassist Billy Blough and drummer Jeff Simon have been there since day one. Guitarist Jim Suhler and saxophonist Buddy Leach joined in 1999 and 2003 respectively. When a band has been together as long as these guys have it creates a strong stability and these cats don’t miss a beat.

The evening began with what else “Rock Party” a song culled from his 2006 release The Hard Stuff. It appeared to be a celebration as he did not waste a minute during his brief 90-minute set. Cranking out his usual blend of rock and boogie, Thorogood played many staples such as “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer”, “I Drink Alone” and the obligatory “Bad To The Bone”. A couple of tunes played that were welcomed with open arms were “Get A Haircut” and the Them cover of “Gloria”. After many years of not playing the gem of his catalog, “Born to Be Bad” it has now been anointed the show closer. It closed out the show with a perfect ending. Written by Thorogood in 1988, the song became the album title and perfectly summed up who George Thorogood is.

Thorogood pointed out the fact he’s been coming to Canada ever since 1978 as he explained how appreciative he was for his Canadian fans. All one had to do was look at the smile across the face of Thorogood to see how much he enjoys doing what he does. The relationship between Thorogood and his fans is a special one. The majority of the audience were dancing in the aisles and even those sitting down were still tapping their feet or bopping along to the groove making
nights such as this one special.
