What is being billed as The Metal Tour Of The Year is no small claim. Megadeth, Lamb Of God, Trivium and In Flames delivered a masterful set each and put on a powerful display of what heavy metal is today. Tuesday, Rochester, NY felt the mayhem and power when the tour landed inside the Blue Cross Arena.

Taking the stage to start off the festivities were the Swedish band In Flames led by vocalist Anders Friden and guitarist Bjorn Gelotte. They kicked off the set with “Cloud Connected” from the 2002 album Reroute to Remain. The band performed the perfect set to start off the whole affair delving into their biggest song “Where The Dead Ships Dwell” as well. They left the stage with “Take This Life” and passed the baton off to Trivium.

Trivium the band that was formed in Orlando, FL, was up next and delivered a set that was just what the doctor ordered. Matt Heafy’s distinct vocals took the band through a forty-minute set featuring many of the band’s standards including three new tracks from the band’s latest offering In The Court Of The Dragon. Despite the band’s short set they delivered the goods as expected.

This led to Randy Blythe and Company taking the stage with a force as they opened their set with “Memento Mori” from the self-titled release that saw the light of day in 2020. Joining Blythe were longtime members bassist John Campbell, guitarists Mark Morton (lead) and Willie Adler (rhythm) and newest member drummer Art Cruz. The energetic set featured a ton of pyro as well as a ton of blistering riffs and Blythe leading the way as only he can.

Dave Mustaine and his latest version of Megadeth closed out the proceedings. Beginning with the classic “Hangar 18”, Mustaine took the crowd on a journey which featured many of the bands classics such as “Sweating Bullets” and “Peace Sells”. Of course the band played their biggest hit “Symphony Of Destruction”. After all the things Mustaine has had to endure over the past year seems to have made him stronger. Look for the band to head back out later in the summer as they will be touring with Five Finger Death Punch. You won’t want to miss it.

This is the way to put together a solid tour. Band for band, pound for pound and dollar for dollar the fans truly got their money’s worth. Let’s hope these type of packages continue as these are the shows you’ll be telling your kids and grandkids about many years from now.
