John Sebastian will always be remembered as a prolific songwriter as well as an artist who had a number one song in both a band and as a solo artist. Saturday evening he played the Bear’s Den Showroom to one of the venue’s bigger crowds. Sebastian told many stories about his many years in the business as he told about not only the songs but how things were at the time.
Even at 75 years old Sebastian managed to play a solid 90-minute set that was heavy on Lovin’ Spoonful tunes as well as featuring “Welcome Back” his smash solo song written for the television show Welcome Back Kotter starring Gabe Kaplan.
Other highlights were “Do You Believe In Magic”, the illustrious “Daydream” and “Younger Girl”. The latter Sebastian had his best line of the night when he joked he never imagined when he wrote that song it would go on to become “creepy” all these years later.
Anyone who has reservations about seeing Sebastian this late in the game needs to not think twice. Sebastian puts on an entertaining show that had the crowd singing along and having a good time. Isn’t that what performing is all about? I’m glad Sebastian still enjoys playing shows this late into his career. The audience are the real winners as they get to see a true legend.
