Buddy Guy, the legendary guitarist known for his Chicago Blues style came to town one more time Friday evening. The show at Seneca Niagara Event Center was a bonus as he had completed his farewell tour last year. The eight time Grammy Award winning Blues guitarist announced his Damn Right Encore tour for 2025 and Niagara Falls was one of the lucky places to land a show on the limited schedule. Guy who has a youthful appearance and a peppy stage presence did not look like an 88 year old musician.
One can only marvel at Guy as he tore through a 70-minute set featuring many iconic songs that he has played throughout his career. The first show of this encore tour went off without a hitch as Guy ripped through classics such as “Five Long Years”, “Drowning On Dry Land” and “Feels Like Rain” which had the audience singing along.
The Buddy Guy band itself was outstanding. The current unit included keyboardist Dan Souvigny, second guitarist Ric Hall, bassist Orlando Wright and newest member Melvin Carlisle on drums. For his finale he brought his son Gary Guy to the stage to showcase his skills to the adoring crowd.
Guy is a true pioneer at his craft. He didn’t earn all the honors and accolades due to his good looks or his longevity. He has influenced many big name players such as Eric Clapton Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck to name a few. Anyone who has yet to catch a Buddy Guy show, we highly recommend doing so before this tour is over. Like a fine wine that never seems to stop flowing Guy still quenches everyone’s thirst for the blues.
