This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of one of the greatest albums in the history of music. Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti was released on February 24, 1975. To celebrate, Jason Bonham has decided to perform the album in it’s entirety to commemorate the occasion. Bonham has stated in the past how this album is his favorite of all the Zeppelin albums so it came as no surprise that he decided to tackle this task. That was exactly what he and his band did.
What can be said about Bonham and his desire to play this classic material and do it justice. It was not easy for Bonham to fill his dad’s shoes and play with the remaining Zeppelin members over the years. But who better to try than Jason who has his own style but manages to pull it off quite convincingly. Early on Bonham mentioned how his manager and others said it was a mistake to play this album. As Bonham spoke the roaring crowd told him otherwise. He said they will play the album in its entirety but not in order as the record to keep the suspense.
The band included the sound entity of vocalist James Dylan, bassist Dorian Heartsong, keyboardist Alex Howland and guitarist (Mr.) Jimmy Sakurai. The thing with these guys is that the individual components really do make a whole band. Each member has their important part to play and they make a formidable unit. Make no mistake though that it is the solid drumming of Jason Bonham that drives the ship and separates these guys from any other unit out there playing Zeppelin songs.
I’ve been fortunate that I did get to see Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant play “Black Country Woman” and “Trampled Under Foot” during a solo tour in 1988. There is something to actually hearing the songs from Physical Graffiti in a live setting. While the aforementioned songs were centerpieces and received a major reaction form the audience for me it was songs like “The Rover”, “In My Time Of Dying” and “In The Light” that were the gems. Perhaps none bigger though than “Ten Years Gone”. What a treat hearing that one live. It was for this reviewer, the song of the night.
After playing Physical Graffiti the band performed what they call the encore although they never left the stage. “Good Times Bad Times”, “Whole Lotta Love” and “Stairway To Heaven” sent the crowd or as Bonham put it his extended family off into the night. As a bonus he offered up one more song and ended the evening with a blistering version of “Rock and Roll”.
For any true Led Zeppelin fan this show was the one to see. The tour just started. This was the third show of the tour and they sound unbelievably fantastic. Check out the remaining dates: https://www.jasonbonham.net/
