Taking a look at the weather forecast about four days before the show made it look like this show was in trouble of not happening. 70% chance of rain all day along with possible severe thunderstorms. As each day grew closer the outlook seemed less bleak. Amazing how perfect of a day it ended up being at the Artpark Amphitheater. Perfect temperature, sunny, fantastic music and most importantly no rain.
Veteran UK band Bush headlined the affair with a solid set of music that featured an array of hits from their catalog. After all this summer run of dates is called Loaded The Greatest Hits Tour. The band started off with the mighty epic “Everything Zen”, the bands best known and most powerful song in this reviewer’s estimation. Following up with “Machinehead” you would think well they just played the two great songs what could possibly top this auspicious start? Well nothing, but the flow of the remaining set was balanced by songs such as “Prizefighter”, “Swallowed” and “Little Things”.
Gavin Rossdale of course, remains the only original member of the band. He was joined by guitarist Chris Traynor and bassist Corey Britz. Drummer Nik Hughes who has been behind the skins since 2019 was also on hand. These guys do the catalog more than justice and put on a powerful set. The band touched at least one song from each album with the exception of the Golden State, Man On the Run and Black and White Rainbows releases.
The encore featured a cover of The Beatles “Come Together” followed by two Bush classics “Glycerine” and “Comedown”. It is a rare occasion when Bush makes it to the Western New York area. With the Town Ballroom show this past November and now this one marks the closest two shows by Bush in years to the area. If you missed these two shows make it a point to catch them if we are fortunate to have them back in the future. Rossdale and his energetic band show no signs of slowing down and seem to really enjoy performing these days.
Jerry Cantrell and his current solo band played a very brief 55-minute set that featured not only songs from his solo albums but also mixed in a few songs from Alice In Chains. Cantrell of course is best known as the founder, lead guitarist, co-lead vocalist, and main songwriter of Alice in Chains. He and his band played an exceptional set. The highlight for me was AIC song “Man In The Box” which was performed to perfection. Next time Cantrell comes to town I hope he will headline so we can see him play longer. Another guy who rarely makes it to town much.
Candlebox was last in town in 2013. Eleven years ago they played the prestigious Bears Den. Since that time the only two constants are original member Vocalist Kevin Martin and bassist Adam Kury. Rounding out the current version of Candlebox were guitarists Brian Quinn and Island Styles along with drummer BJ Kerwin. Their 45-minute set touched heavily on the debut album and why not most people are very familiar with it. The highlight of the set was without a doubt “Far Behind”. Martin sounded quite impressive throughout the set. Last year the band was set to call it day with what was to be their final tour. They decided to extend the Long Goodbye tour into 2024. If this was the final time we saw Candlebox it appears they are going out in fine style.
The night began with Bones UK a three piece band featuring guitarist/vocalist Rosie Bones, guitarist Carmen Vandenberg and drummer Heavy. Definitely an interesting trio worth checking out if you see em in your area.
