If you were lucky enough to see The Gilmour Project the last time they came to town at The Riviera Theatre, you probably knew what to expect. That is until the band tore into their second set of the night. It was tedious during the first half of the second set for people not too familiar with Pink Floyd’s early catalog but a welcome for all the diehards. Oddly enough May 13 is the same date the band held their prior visit to the Riv as well.
The first half began with the usual performance of the band playing Pink Floyd’s 1973 Dark Side Of The Moon album in its entirety. They really mastered that first set with “Us and Them” and “Brain Damage” serving as the big highlights. The band is comprised of two members from Todd Rundgren’s band in bassist Kasim Sultan and drummer Prairie Prince, as well as keyboardist Scott Guberman and guitarists Jeff Pevar and Mark Karan. These guys put on an amazing performance and really went to great lengths to learn some very old material that you don’t see performed much these days in any kind of setting.
While every musician had a chance to shine in the spotlight, I would be remiss if I failed to mention how amazing Prince sounded. What a machine he is to be playing a long set like that at age 73. For me Prince was the star of the show and the only member to not to any vocal.
Highlights of the second set would be a cool version of “Another Brick in the Wall Part 2” and the double encore of “Wish You Were Here” which was followed by a stellar “Comfortably Numb”.
If these cats make it anywhere remotely close to your town I highly recommend checking them out. Hopefully they will be back May 13 2024 to keep it a tradition.
