Shinedown played their first Buffalo area headlining show in some seven years Friday Evening. The sparse crowd of 8,000 inside KeyBank Center made up for the size with their voices as they sang along to many of the bands classic songs. The 90-minute performance was in support of the band’s latest effort Attention Attention which was released last year.

The band’s current incarnation led by vocalist Brent Smith has now been together since 2008. Joining Smith were guitarist Zach Myers, bassist Eric Bass and drummer Barry Kerch.

Prior to the show the house music leading to the band’s stage entrance featured music from The Cars and Eddie Money in tribute to the recent passing of Cars vocalist Ric Ocasek and Money. That was a touch of class especially when you consider many fans in attendance weren’t even born when those artists made their big splash.

Shinedown are one of the few bands today that stick to an old school type of way of doing things. A huge curtain hung from the front of the stage concealing the band until the lights went down and the curtain dropped. The band exploded out of the gates with “Devil”, the opener from Attention Attention. The song also resided in the top spot on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs Chart.

The band’s stage set featured ramps and pyro reminiscent of a Poison stage. Smith ran around all over the stage using up every inch. Highlights featured great renditions of “Simple Man”, “I’ll Follow You” and the best tune of the night “Second Chance”. The fist pumping anthem “Enemies” also stood out as one of the notable songs performed.

This marked band’s second area show in support of the new album. They also played the Darien Lake Amphitheater last summer with Godsmack.

At one point in time bands like Hinder and Buckcherry were anointed to carry the torch to bring rock into the new millennium but they are no longer the powerhouses they once were. Shinedown remains one of the very few bands that many cite as the best chance for rock to make a strong comeback. After watching their performance I can see why. The next studio album Smith and Company record is perhaps their most pivotal one yet as it will go along way to determine their future going forward.

Also on the bill were Papa Roach, Asking Alexandria and Savage After Midnight.
