Steve Miller strolled through the Southern Tier Saturday evening and played to a near full house at the Seneca Allegany Events Center. He was accompanied by a solid band that included bassist Kenny Lee Lewis, guitarist Jacob Peterson, keyboardist Joseph Wooten and drummer Gordy Knudston.
The recent Hall of Fame inductee began with what appeared to be an impromptu version of “Living In The USA” before picking up the pace by breaking out his customary opener “Jungle Love”. Just like that the show was off and running. Two of his best songs followed in “Take The Money And Run” and chart topping 80s classic “Abracadabra”.
Miller explained to the audience when he wrote “Space Cowboy”, it was also during an election year back in 1968. “It still applies today” he quipped.
The outspoken Miller recently found himself in the news taking aim at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Board for what he calls a lack of respect towards the artist. Miller ripped them so hard the press room was closed immediately after Miller spoke to the media. I must say that I have to agree with what he said.
It was quite evident Miller was relishing his time on stage as he tore through his set at a steady pace. The middle portion of the show featured some blues and some of his lesser known tracks.
“The Joker” brought out the first standing ovation of the night as from there the crowd seemed more alive as he hit them with a barrage of hits. Mega-hit “Fly Like An Eagle” followed by a blistering “Rock’n Me” closed out the main set.
Back for a quick encore of “The Stake” and show closer “Jet Airliner” had the crowd begging for more.
Miller and his band played an unforgettable night of music and sent the fans home marveling at just how good he still is. It was no wonder that his inclusion into the Hall of Fame was not only just due but long overdue.
