Saying Rick Derringer has had an interesting career is quite an understatement. The veteran singer-songwriter-producer has had his share of successes. It all began for him at age 17 when his band The McCoys reached the top spot on the charts with their single “Hang On Sloopy”.
From there he played with both Johnny and Edgar Winter before going solo. He scored a top 40 hit with “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo” which peaked at #23 in 1973. Derringer has worked with many various artists producing and playing on their albums.
Friday night Derringer and his three piece band played the Buffalo Iron Works to a very decent crowd. Joining him were drummer Kenn Moutenot and bassist Charlie Torres both of whom have decent resume’s in regards to who they have played with during their career.
Derringer at 68 can still play the guitar as well as he ever has as he demonstrated Friday evening during his seventy-five minute set.
Although he has a number one with “Hang On Sloopy” and a top 40 with “Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo”, perhaps his best known song is “Real American”. It was used for wrestler Hulk Hogan as his theme music during his heyday during the 1980’s.
Derringer and his band played an entertaining set that focused on the music that he has been associated with throughout his 50 year career.
