The remarkable Eric Burdon made a return visit to the Queen city on Friday evening. Burdon is widely considered one of the greatest singers of all-time. Whenever a list comes out his name not only appears but is found near the top. Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as a member of The Animals in 1994, Burdon still keeps active by performing 20 or so dates a year. So needless to say it was a treat having him open for Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo at Canalside.

Kicking off his short but solid fifty minute set with “When I Was Young,” Burdon transported the crowd back to a simpler time. The man can still sing as he demonstrated to the crowd on such gems as “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and “Spill The Wine.”

Burdon released an album earlier this year entitled ‘Til Your River Runs Dry. “Bo Didley Special” and “Water” were represented and fit right in alongside all the storied hits from his illustrious career.

Burdon managed to save the best for last as he tore through perhaps two of his most recognizable songs from his Animals days in “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” and “It’s My Life.” His all too brief set ended with a blistering take on his lone number one U.S. hit “House Of The Rising Sun.”

Burdon has played many shows in town throughout his long career. To call him a nostalgia act is almost an insult as he proved to the crowd that he can still sing and perform as well as he ever has. Burdon’s unique style and sound is like a fine wine as he keeps getting better as time goes on.
