Tokyo Police Club
The Sheila Divine
Thursday At The Harbor
Buffalo, NY
By Joseph Suto
The Tokyo Police club have quietly built a cult following as evidenced by the amount of younger people in the crowd this past Thursday night. Don’t get me wrong the majority of the late arriving crowd came just for them. However they actually missed quite the performance from The Sheila Divine.
Lead singer/bassist David Monks led the Newmarket band through many of the bands hits including “Favourite Colour”, “Tessellate”, and “Your English Is Good”. Although the crowd seemed into the band, several members of the audience acted like buffoons and attempted to crowd surf but the security was right on top of the situation. The band has done several festival shows, however judging by their stage persona, they seem more fitted to playing clubs. I really couldn’t see the band filling up more than one-third of the pavilion at the Darien Lake PAC.
As for the Sheila Divine, they played a real pleasing set that as the show went on the crowd got bigger. Standout track “Like A Criminal” was early in the set and was stunning. The band also played some new yet-to-be released songs as well as some other standards such as “Hum”, “Opportune Moment” and “Automatic Buffalo”.
This show also brought the Free Thursday segment to a close at the Square/Harbor for the 25th season. Time will tell if this will be the permanent home for the Square or if they will split the season between the two spots again next year.
